Job Description

United States International University – Africa is located in the Kasarani area, off Thika Road in the suburb of Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi. The university is an independent, not-for-profit institution serving 6512 students representing 69 nationalities. It offers 24 degree programs from undergraduate to doctoral level, all of which are accredited in Kenya and the United States of America.

Job Summary

Reporting to the University Librarian, the holder of this position will be responsible for developing library resources and support that enhance learning and teaching, research and professional practice. The role has a strategic lead within the library for research data and outputs and study skills support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply a blended approach to teaching information literacy credit bearing course, including face-to-face teaching and the development of online activities as appropriate to enhance learning.
  • Develop assessment strategies and tools to measure student progress and to adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Manage information literacy services for the General Education program and participate in the teaching of non-credit information literacy sessions.
  • In partnership with library colleagues, develop and maintain library instructional materials, tutorials, and other learning objects for an array of disciplines and subject areas.
  • Coordinate the design and development of new subject guides and update the existing guides.
  • Participate in Library Services budget planning and the formulation and review of goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide research assistance to students including one-on-one and small group support for students particularly with reference to literature searching and scholarly publishing.
  • Actively participate in staff development activities and provide training for other Library staff.
  • Maintain understanding and current knowledge of developments in librarianship, information work and higher education.
  • Compile regular section reports and statistics to inform decision making.
  • Participate in library marketing and outreach activities.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Educational Qualifications and professional Experience

  • PhD in Library and Information Sciences.
  • Professional Librarian qualification.
  • Up to date experience (last 2 years) of working in a higher education library.
  • Experience in information literacy skills development within a University
    Library.
  • Knowledge of designing and delivering skills development to groups and individuals working at a range of levels
  • Experience of producing materials to support online learning, resource retrieval and exploration.

  • Ability to conduct and support skills development for systematic literature reviews and other complex search strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide creative and innovative solutions to challenges and problems.
