Job Description

In 1992, for the first time ever, The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (UK) gave the first shipping award to a candidate from the African continent. The “CORY BROTHERS SHIPPING AWARD” went to ESL’s founder and Managing Director, Mr Silvester Kututa.

Summary

We have an excellent and exciting opportunity for a Technical In-Charge who holds professional qualification and practical abilities in general technical/engineering areas. The position shall be based in Mombasa.

Responsibilities

Planning:

  • Annual Planning for technical activities in line with the budget and strategic plan.
  • Preparation of the technical budgets including capex
  • Long term planning for the replacements of the major technical assets.
  • Task allocation to department staff.
  • Plan for weekly activities through performance dialogues.
  • Report of a weekly basis on technical asset utilization.
  • Keep pace with key stakeholder developments ie post and operations.
  • Research on best practices in management of technical assets.

Equipment and property management:

  • Develop and maintain a preventive and corrective maintenance schedule.
  • Report urgent maintenance tasks to management for approval.
  • Monitor usage of company equipment and property
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and performing repairs.
  • Coordinate technical stock purchase and utilization
  • Manage technical costs.
  • Conduct regular inspection on all company assets as required.
  • Ensure proper branding of company assets as per brand guidelines

Operations Coordination:

  • Ensure all port equipment are ready for use.
  • Monitor technical assets to minimize on operations downtime.
  • Ensure timely mobilization of equipment.
  • Monitor trimming operations and ensure set target hours are not exceeded.
  • Ensure safety of operators and third parties using machines and equipment.
  • Ensure operational cost are controlled and within budget.
  • Timely renewal of port pass
  • Facilitate the acquisition of Port approvals e.g., Security, fire and safety, hot work permits, specialized equipment use, etc.
  • Map and manage key technical stakeholders.

Record Management:

  • Proper documentation of all equipment, preventive and corrective maintenance works, technical manuals and technical costs (invoices and payment made.
  • Keep an inventory of maintenance tools, materials, and parts.
  • Ensure efficient documentation of valid OSHA and NTSA inspection reports.
  • Ensure all technical documents are inline with the Quality Management system.

Risk Management:

  • Identify and manage risks within the technical and operations scope of work
  • Ensure compliance to safety and security regulations and standards when undertaking maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance to all related equipment and property laws
  • Conduct root cause analysis for all incidents, accidents, misses or near misses.

Other duties:

  • Any other duty assigned by supervisor.

Key Competencies and Skills

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or any related Engineering course.
  • 3-5 years of experience in heavy plant repairs.
  • A valid driver’s license
