Job Description

The Mater Hospital was opened in 1962 by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic Order of Nuns originating from Ireland, three years after registering themselves as the Registered Trustees of an entity under the Perpetual Succession Act (the succeeding legislation after independence).

Main Duties

  •  Monitoring standards of nursing care and other support services to ensure delivery of quality patient care
  •  Developing and implementing unit budget and ensuring operations are within the budget
  •  Addressing issues and concerns within the section to ensure both internal and external customer satisfaction
  •  Submitting monthly activity reports to the management
  •  Updating staff on health and safety requirements to ensure a safe environment and compliance with the statutory requirements
  •  Liaising with various experts, consultants and section heads to achieve departmental and institutional goals
  •  Ensuring adequate supply and proper management of staff, consumables and assets to maximize efficiency and cost controls
  •  Ensuring effective infection control measures
  •  In liaison with the Security Manager ensuring adequate security at the premises throughout and reporting any incidents
  •  Participating in quality improvement initiatives within the department and providing reports as required

Staff management and development

  •  Ensuring proper induction of new staff for smooth adaptation and correct practice
  •  Fostering teamwork among staff
  •  Liaising with the Director of Nursing Services, relevant HODs and Head of Human Resources on disciplinary issues, complaints, improvement, performance appraisal and motivation
  •  Liaising with the Director of Nursing Services, the CPE, and other relevant HODs and the Head of Human Resources on identified training needs of the Nursing staff and initiating staff development programme

Patient care

  •  Liaising with the clinical team and other departments on patient care
  •  Supervising and guiding nursing staff on effective patient care
  •  Any other duty as assigned

Required Qualifications for the Position

  •  Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nurses (KRCHN)
  •  Higher National Diploma in Critical Care Nursing (KRCCN) or Accident & Emergency (KRAEN)
  •  BSc Nursing
  •  Certificate in Counselling
  •  Computer Proficiency
  •  Registered with NCK with a valid practising license
  •  Minimum experience of 5 years in Nursing
