Job Description

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the UN agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision the Chief of the Urban Planning, Finance and Economy Section, the intern will assist in development of the social inclusion and human rights agenda activities of the Urban Practices Branch as well as other Sections and units in UN-Habitat in the following ways;

  • Support the development of the technical and normative outputs of the Planning, Finance and Economy Section by assisting in gathering data, analysing, contributing to preparation of reports and technical documents, preparation of presentations and other dissemination materials on social inclusion and human rights.
  • Assist in the definition and implementation of the social inclusion and human rights activities and outputs, such as mainstreaming social inclusion and human rights in the urban planning methodology, development of socially inclusive projects and tools, documentation and evaluation of practice, and organization of workshops and meetings, preparation of field missions and scoping missions.
  • Support the Planning, Finance and Economy Section in the mainstreaming social inclusion and human rights in the urban planning and design projects, urban plans, workshops, trainings, Charrettes, and different tools to promote more inclusive urban planning and design.
  • Assist in the development of social inclusion and human rights in urban planning policy documents, guidelines, information materials, presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents, and assisting in producing information materials.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Task opportunities;

  • Familiarizing oneself with social inclusion, human rights, urban planning, urban finance and economy, urban environmental issues and urban development; and
  • Assisting in the development of content and methodology on inclusive and sustainable urban planning and development.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Preferred areas of studies:

  • Social studies, Human Rights Law, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Architecture, Geography or any other related studies.
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
