Volunteer EPI Nurse

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical mentorship and supervision for EPI activities, including immunization and equipment monitoring.
  • Participate in Vaccine Disease Preventable surveillance activities and management of immunization during outbreaks and catch-up.
  • Together with the Health Manager, Plan and generate an annual vaccine projection, as well as assign individualized facility immunization targets for performance tracking and evaluation.
  • Sensitization and ensuring that infection prevention and control guidelines and processes are in existence and carefully adhered to for Covid-19 and routine infants’ vaccine preventable diseases, in addition to strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Keeping track of all IRC EPI Cold Chain equipment and auxiliary commodities and supplies, by maintaining an updated inventory.
  • Identification and timely communication of all breakages and malfunctioning equipment to the supply chain, maintenance department for repair works and/or replacement EPI facilities.
  • Timely placement of vaccine orders on either monthly or quarterly basis from the DVI/NVIP regional stores to ensure uninterrupted supply in the facilities and making sure that cold chain management is maintained throughout the transit process and during immunization sessions.
  • Provide targeted Health Promotion Messages about immunization to all EPI clients in a language they understand.
  • Collect and analyze EPI data weekly and to confirm align with approved MoH vaccination coverage proportions, and the report findings shared to Health Manager/MEAL department.
  • Report any adverse events following immunization (AEFI) to Pharmacovigilance via the Pharmacy Board of Kenya for both routine and Covid-19 vaccinations.
  • Regularly supervise and coordinate defaulters using the MoH 525 registry. Collaborate with CHPOs to improve vaccination coverage and reduce dropout rates.
  • Ensuring that all relevant EPI indicators are followed up regularly and data displayed on the whiteboards in all service delivery points within the IRC.
  • Conducting regular workshops and On-Job-Training sessions to EPI staff to keep them updated on various changes noted on the EPI SOPs.
  • Monitoring and supervising proper usage of supplies at the assigned EPI departments or units.
  • Report vaccines stocks of the same to the supervisor.
  • Carrying out any other additional duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing.
  • 2 years’ experience in immunization or public health nursing.
  • Training on ACLS/BLS/PHTLS.
  • Additional training on IDSR will be an added advantage.

Required Experience & Proficiencies:

  • Good Knowledge of programs and Projects in the refugee operations with the ability to diagnose problems and identify and drive appropriate solutions.
  • Strong leadership, team building, conflict resolution and ability to deliver the Society’s strategic objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: oral, written, presentation and reporting.
  • Have insight into EPI and Disease surveillance.
  • Be highly encouraging towards all IRC staff and collaborators.
  • Proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, power point, spreadsheets and utilization of the internet.
