Job Summary

AKU- Department of Pathology is seeking a Senior Instructor, Anatomic Pathology who will undertake clinical and educational functions under the supervision of the Department or delegated individual within the department.  In this role, the faculty undertakes diagnosis and management of patients (and their specimens) admitted under University team or private admitting doctors. He/she may prescribe or request certain tests or perform certain procedures at the discretion of the Physician who is briefed on regular basis regarding plans for more complex diagnostic or management issues.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with laboratory technologist on the bench to ensure quality test results.
  • Report histologies and cytologies.
  • Initiate discussions with patient and care givers to enable better diagnostic and therapeutic medical care and services.
  • Take role of teaching and supervising residents, SHOs and other clinical staff.
  • Participate in establishing various planning parameters for addressing referral cases received at AKUH.
  • Participate in discussions with relevant members of the clinical care team to enable better integration of patient care activities.
  • Work closely with other members of the clinical care team to reduce errors and waste, improve skillfulness and resource utilization.
  • Participate in developing and reviewing the syllabus for assigned teaching modules.
  • Clinical teaching of all staff cadres working in inpatient and outpatient services.
  • Involved in research involvement – University priority and personal interest areas.
  • Participating in Departmental Residency Training Committee (DRTC), examination and other faculty or departmental meetings as may be determined.
  • Seek opportunities to attain and maintain competency in knowledge and skills to perform duties described; and
  • Collaborate with consultants and colleagues to enable integration of clinical research activities, shared knowledge, institutional quality improvement and patient wellness activities.

Requirements

  • Master of Medicine in Pathology.
  • Specialization in Anatomic Pathology.
  • Registration by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
  • Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Completion of formal Post-Graduate Medical Education training in a recognized university.
  • Has + 7 years working experience in an ISO 15189:2012 / 2022 accredited Laboratory
  • Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrates honesty, integrity, compassion and respect for diversity and applies ethical principles appropriately.
  • Seeks and accepts advice and adheres to deadlines.
  • Punctual and respects commitments made.
  • Responsible team player.
